History of the hand fan in Spain
After the appearance of the folding fan in Spain on the XVI Th century, soon the first manufacturers raised, unfortunately their names remain unknown.

On the XVIII Th century there were many known hand fan creators in Madrid, but the French Eugenio Prost stands out. He arrives Spain under the protection of the count of Floridablanca. During this period Valencia will be recognized as the main production centre of fans, where an established group of fan makers created an association.

On 1693, the 8Th of June, some master artisans try to create an association without success.

Despite the existence of many master artisans, the importation of hand fans from Italy and France was growing. This situation in 1679 forces Carlos the II to limit the entrance of fans from those countries.

In the reign of Felipe V, the importation of fans from France, Italy, Holland and England is again on the rise.

In 1832 a royal factory of fans exists in Valencia. This zone stands out at a European level as an outstanding place for fan makers. Due to this reason, Simonet and Coustelier two French fan makers established themselves on that city (1825) bringing a new way to create fans, importing the pieces and then assembling them there. Very soon many Spanish industrialists had to ask Fernando V to forbid the importation of French fans.

In addition to the previous statement, the great fan maker that will revolution all the hand fan production will be José Colomina.

On the XX Th century the production of Valencia hand fans will be at its very pick until the interruption of the Spanish civil war. After that, a recovery process took place and at the year of 1983 more than 40 factories could be counted in Valencia, Godella, and Aldaya.
